Here Are 5 Reasons the G7 Summit Was a Disappointment - TIME
"...Until last year, the G7 used to be the G8. But then Russia decided to invade Ukraine, so it was booted from the group. Sanctions followed, and the Russian economy took a tumble. Inflation hit 15.8 percent this past May, while GDP fell 4.2 percent year-on-year in April. The ruble has lost 11 percent of its value against the US dollar in the last month alone. Food prices are soaring: 50 percent of Russians have reduced consumption since sanctions began, and 20 percent say they have no disposable income left after paying for food and shelter. Yet Russia remains in Ukraine, and Vladimir Putin remains undaunted. The G7 announced at the summit that sanctions will remain in place so long as Putin ignores the Minsk ceasefire agreement brokered in February and that was pretty much it. So for those wondering, the crisis in Ukraine continues...." see full article

G7 Leaders Escalate War Threats against Russia - Center for Research on Globalization
"...The hypocrisy and recklessness of Obama and his G7 counterparts is breathtaking. They are denouncing Russian aggression in Ukraine, which they plunged into civil war by backing a fascist-led putsch last year that toppled a pro-Russian government. Now, US and NATO armed forces are conducting air, sea and ground exercises all along Russia's borders. In Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, Scandinavia, the Baltic Sea, and the Black Sea, the US and its allies are rehearsing the opening stages of an all-out war with Russia.Last week, US defense officials testifying before the US House of Representatives indicated that the Pentagon is considering launching pre-emptive strikes against Russian targets, including with nuclear weapons (see: US officials consider nuclear strikes against Russia). These statements are no doubt now being carefully studied by the Russian military...." see full article

G7 Leaders Affirm Russia Sanctions - Voice of America
"...Russia was suspended from what used to be the Group of Eight last year because of its occupation and annexation of Ukraine's Crimea region, and its support for separatists in eastern Ukraine. The remaining G7 leaders pledged to increase support for Ukraine's reform and economic growth efforts, but did not say anything about military aid, which some G7 nations provide on a bi-lateral basis.John Hudson, a senior reporter with Foreign Policy Magazine, said U.S. officials met their goals of maintaining sanctions...." see full article

At G7 summit, Obama finds support, unity for trade deals, Russian sanctions - Fox News

"...At most, leaders hope to emerge from the talks with an agreement to keep U.S. and European Union sanctions against Russia in place and perhaps a pledge to enact deeper economic penalties if the crisis escalates. The world leaders also spent more than an hour Sunday privately discussing trade issues, as Capitol Hill lawmakers debate whether to give Obama the authority to move trade agreements through Congress more quickly.Obama and his advisers voiced confidence about the trade-authority deal to Merkel, British Prime Minister David Cameron and the other world economic leaders, at Schloss Elmau, a one-time German artist retreat turned luxury spa...." see full article

Obama Faces Challenges Forging Unity With Europeans Over Russia Sanctions ... - International Business Times
"...Obama faces increasing public hostility toward the U.S. in Germany, fueled by revelations that the NSA had tapped Chancellor Angela Merkel's phone, and that the country's intelligence service, the BND, had helped the U.S. spy on European companies, including German giant Siemens AG, and officials for years. While Obama and Merkel reportedly have a good personal relationship, both have acknowledged the effect the spying revelations have had on relations between the two countries. G7 Summit Starts With Renewed Opposition to Russia's Ukraine Involvement - Voice of America
"...Russia was suspended from the group last year, after it invaded and annexed Ukraine's Crimea region. G7 countries are among the leaders of an extensive sanctions regime designed to convince Russian President Vladimir Putin to change his policy. All of us would prefer to have Russia around the table in the G8 format, said European Council President Donald Tusk. But our Group is not only a political and economic group of interests, but first of all this is a community of values, and that is why Russia is not among us here today and will not be invited as long as it behaves aggressively against Ukraine and other countries. ..." see full article
